Changing Professions

Expert advice: Fadhila Brahimi, founder of FB Associés, an expert in Personal Branding, coach certified by the International Coach Federation (ICF), Director of ISOC France (Internet Society) and member of the French Professional Speakers' Association (AFCP).

  1. 1 - What does "change” mean?
    • • A change does not always mean a full break; consider internal mobility;
    • • Changing professions impacts all aspects of one’s life; view it over the medium to long term based on a staged process.
  2. 2 - What are these stages?
    • • Studying the triggering event (physical signs, lack of motivation, etc.);
    • • Reconnecting to one's initial aspirations; list them, consider equivalents and points of convergence with one's current profession;
    • • Working on the “my resources, my environment, my needs” trio: list your professional and life skills; listen to what your professional and personal environment is telling you; identify your needs.
  3. 3 - How to design a project; talk about one’s self and one’s expectations?
    • • Talk about “me”;
    • • Avoid harming others;
    • • Stick to facts and be constructive.

HOW TO MAKE A CAREER CHANGE
BY FADHILA BRAHIMI

WHAT IS MEANT BY "CHANGE"?

What is meant by change? First of all, I should point out that change does not mean rupture. Secondly, you should know that change has an impact on every sphere of life. Finally, change also means setting mid and long-term career goals: your career plan should be established step by step before being implemented. Instead of a market study, you will conduct a career investigation and set a budget.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT STEPS?

First, analyse the reasons that make you consider leaving your current career. It can result from a physical condition. But it can also be linked to lack of motivation or fear of commitment. Pressure can also be external. Then, rediscover your passion and identify your current wants. Before starting working and making your first steps in a company, you may have had an interest in a particular job or industry. I advise you to list your priorities in order to assess what your ambitions are, not only in terms of job types, but also in terms of businesses or assignment types. Then, you can see if they match any job opportunity. You have to evaluate what skills from your current job are transferable to your new career. The last step is to focus on three aspects: your resources, your environment and your needs. You need to assess the skills you have developed in your personal and professional life. You can submit
to a skills assessment. Second element, environment. What does it tell you? Your close professional environment, that of your company. What kind of evolution is your company planning in terms of services, products and perhaps in terms of organization or jobs? Your professional environment outside the company: how does the business sector evolve, what are the other business sectors, and how does your job evolve as well. You have to understand that the success of your project also depends on the support and commitment of your family and friends. And then, you must discover what is missing, regarding your needs. Since you have evaluated your resources, observed your environment, what do you need now to move forward? Information? In this case, you can go to the Fongecif office in your region, where you can find lots of books about jobs and maps of jobs that are parallel to yours, as well as information about skills and formations linked with your job.

HOW TO DEFINE A PROJECT AND TALK ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR EXPECTATIONS?

It is often difficult to talk about your project and about yourself. How could you proceed? My first advice would be to choose a person who agrees to support you and to be your interlocutor
throughout your project. My second advice would be to have an expression tool. With this tool, you are going to be able to capitalize, to write your ideas and to organize them. And finally, think in a positive way: "I feel", "I'd like", "I think", in order to avoid blaming other people or your environment for things that prevent you from moving forward.
