Expert advice: Jacques Froissant, founding director of Altaïde, a specialist in recruitment and HR consultant for startups and Web players; a recognized blogger on topics related to new Internet recruitment tools.

  1. 1 - Should a LinkedIn/Viadeo profile be a perfect copy of your resume?
    Do not cut and paste your resume, but indicate the following in your profile:
    • • Principal significant experience;
    • • Concrete items to illustrate this experience (type of positions and missions, results achieved, references, business of the company in which you currently work);
    • • Keywords.
  2. 2 - What is the role of keywords?
    To bring a profile up to the top of search list results. Determine your keywords as precisely as possible by thinking about what a recruiter would use to find a profile like yours.
  3. 3 - How to create greater differentiation?
    • • Invite your actual network to join you on digital networks to increase your visibility; seek a balance between quantity and quality;
    • • Regularly update and add to your profile (status, Web links, shared documents, etc.) to regularly appear in your network's news.

ENHANCE YOUR VISIBILITY ON SOCIAL NETWORKS
BY JACQUES FROISSANT

SHOULD A LINKEDIN/VIADEO PROFILE
BE THE EXACT COPY OF YOUR RESUME?

On the web, you have more room than on a conventional one-page resume. You have to find a kind of compromise. You have to give as much information as possible while remaining concise. I advise you to make strategic choices and to mention the most relevant experiences you made. You also have to take the job title into account. Do not necessarily use the job title mentioned on your pay slip or in the company. Try not to only describe the content of your assignments but also to give examples. How can you do so? You can either use figures or cite works you have accomplished. Last important thing that people tend to forget: write about your company’s activity. It’s the good opportunity to use keywords.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF KEYWORDS?

What is the role of keywords in social networks? We are on the web, so someone like a recruiting officer uses keywords to look for you on Linkedln or Viadeo. If these keywords are not on your profile, you will not appear first on the search engine. You have to choose the right keywords in order people to find your profile.

HOW CAN YOU CATCH MORE ATTENTION?

I mentioned the role of profile and keywords. There is another major point: inviting your real network to be connected to you. LinkedIn and Viadeo offer some tools that can import your address book. In using that option, you can have access to people that are both in your address book and on Viadeo or on Linkedln. If you want to catch more attention on social networks, you should have a great number of connections. But be careful: you have to find the right compromise between quantity and quality. It’s more interesting to have 50 connections with each 10 or 20 connections in average, connections of a certain quality, than 100 contacts in connection with only one or two persons. If you want employers to notice you, you can also update your profile, even if you only make little changes. The last point I would like to mention is the profile customization. If you created a professional blog or a Twitter account, you can share information. Well, you have the opportunity to connect those networks and make your latest statutes on Twitter or your last posts on your blog appear on your profile.
