My name is Katan Hirachand and I’m a director within the energy project finance team in London. We provide advisory services for energy projects that are looking to raise third party finance in the markets, we also provide direct lending to these projects. Because of the nature of these projects, and the magnitude, they often involve multiple sources of funding, so it’s our role to lead and coordinate those sources of funding for these projects. I started my career at SG through actually being on the opposite side of the table, i.e. as a client of SG’s within an oil and gas company. There were several attractions about coming to SG. Clearly the caliber of the bank and the reputation of the bank within the energy sphere was probably the most attractive feature at the time. My career path at SG has been very progressive – SG is an environment where excellence is very much rewarded, SG prides itself on being the best at what we do, and I’ve certainly found it to be an environment in which a meritocracy thrives, in terms of rewarding people’s talent and ability. A number of things have positively surprised me since joining SG. I would probably summarize it into a few areas. The caliber of people is definitely a huge strength of the bank, and did surprise me on joining; as to how strong and widespread the general caliber of people are within SG. One of the other areas that also surprised me was probably the strength in terms of the bank’s global network; when you’re working in a sector like energy, which is truly a global business, and forces you to go to all parts of the world, it’s very reassuring, and certainly provides a competitive advantage, when you do have such a strong global network. So going to far-flung places in Africa, for example, or the Far East and seeing the SG global reach has certainly positively surprised me a lot. The other item, I would almost describe SG as a bit of Pandora’s box in terms of what it’s able to offer, the extent of products, again working in an energy field where clients require so many different types of solution, it’s impressive and reassuring to see the scope of products that SG can provide.
