My name is Per Starrsjo, I work in our corporate investment banking division, and more specifically in the financial institutions team. I’m a managing director there, and my role is to be responsible for our relationships with banks, insurance companies, asset managements and pension funds in the Nordic region. I work very closely with my partners in the different teams and the different product divisions of the bank to try to find solutions there for our clients, and what's fascinating is that it covers a whole range of issues; it can be how to raise capital, how to reduce a need for capital, funding is obviously always a very topical issue, but it also concerns investment products - how should different institutions invest our assets, and also to develop products of investment character that they can offer to their clients. Thinking back, I guess there are a couple of things that struck me a little bit – surprised me – on the positive side. One is on the derivatives skills set, one of the key worlds that you see here at Société Générale is the focus on derivatives, and that has been for a very, very long time. But it’s even stronger than what I thought. Whoever you talk to has a kind of derivative mindset to their way of looking at risk and reward. We clearly are very present in the cash market as well – you have to – but that gives us an edge over other institutions when we speak to our clients, try to find solutions for them. The financial strength is also another one, you know, I did my due diligence, and obviously looked at the books, but it has come through even stronger than I expected, but it does allow us to continue to build. Clearly we are affected, as others are, but we are in much better shape, and that is of benefit to ourselves, and more importantly for our clients. Thirdly, team work. That’s critical today, because whatever you do, you can’t do it on your own, you can’t do it with your team alone, you have to rely on experts, on capabilities that other people have – so we have to make sure that we all work together as a seamless team. And it’s not only something that makes life more pleasing as a professional, from your personal perspective, but it also allows you to win more business, because that’s the way you can find the best solutions for your clients.
