Michael Collins, head of corporate responsibility in the UK. I joined 20 years ago now, since when the bank has given me the opportunity to work in three different countries, and in several areas, including capital market sales, management, country management, and most recently corporate responsibility, this has meant me undergoing fairly significant changes roughly every 5 years. I think adapting to those changes, be they language, location, culture, or acquiring new skills has arguably been perhaps the most interesting part of my career, but I would say the current position in corporate responsibility is certainly the most rewarding. When establishing the CR function we looked at the bank’s existing activities in this area, and decided to focus on areas where we could add value. This translates into a citizenship program, focused on volunteering and charitable giving, minimizing our carbon footprint and ensuring that social and environmental aspects are fully embedded into the bank’s financing, investment management and advisory activities. When building the various programs, we looked at the drivers behind corporate responsibility and decided that staff engagement was the most important. Staff today have a high social and environmental conscience and expect more of their employer than simply focusing on share-holder value. We responded to these expectations by building a range of volunteering programs, so that staff could assist in local schools, charities and small companies. We also built a charitable giving program, focused principally on a charity of the year, but also to help staff help their own chosen charities in their own locations. We now have around 15% of staff involved in corporate responsibility activities, and we’ve developed our charitable giving to a point where we donated more than £600,000 to charity last year. Anyone joining the bank in the UK can be assured not only of pursuing their own career development, but of being able to participate in citizenship, environmental activities which can really make a difference.
